Fred Baron was a pioneer in the area of mass tort litigation. During his early career, he revolutionized the industry by applying strict liability causes of action in asbestos litigation, and together with Ness Motley, handled nearly half of all the asbestos claims in America. He was successful in convincing the U.S. Supreme Court to de-certify nationwide asbestos class action settlements involving future claims of people who are not yet ill, but who may later develop asbestos-related illnesses by pointing out that many asbestos-related illnesses have a latency period of 20–40 years from the date of exposure. Baron inspired a generation of lawyers to continue to represent asbestos workers and persons with asbestos exposure. In addition to his work representing asbestos victims, he reached a $20 settlement agreement for victims of lead contamination by RSR Corporation. Baron was also a top fundraiser for the Democratic Party, and served as the finance chair for John Edwards’ 2004 Presidential campaign.
