James Montgomery has been a leader in both civil rights and product liability cases in America for more than 5 decades. He handled several high profile civil rights cases that garnered national attention, including a case against the Chicago police department for the murder of two Black Panther leaders during a police raid. After a long and hard-fought battle, Montgomery secured a $1.8 million verdict for families of the deceased. This would not be the last case of discrimination that he handled against the Chicago police department, and he would go on to win another settlement for discriminatory death exceeding $18 million — the largest in state history at the time. He was also successful in taking on automobile manufacturers for a faulty roof design. In 1983, Jim was appointed Corporation Counsel of the City of Chicago under Mayor Harold Washington. He was also named a fellow of the prestigious International Academy of Trial Lawyers, and in 1999, the Illinois Academy of Lawyers inducted Jim as a Laureate, an honor which personifies the greatness of the legal profession and its principles through a record of service to the law, the profession, and the public.
